Wind and Brass Ensemble

A programme of vigorous and colourful music that shows off the skills of RNS wind and brass players. The first half begins with vibrant brass music from Renaissance Venice by Gabrieli, and continues with Ligeti’s early, very witty and folk-inspired Bagatelles for wind quintet. These are followed by Stravinsky’s 1923 Octet that brings 18th century mannerisms, echoes of Stravinsky’s own ballets and 1920s jazz together in a delightful combination. In the second half of the concert, Mozart’s Serenade in C minor has all the grace, stamina and lyricism familiar from his mature works that prepare us nicely for Beethoven’s poised and energetic Octet.
