This concert of American music offers a wide range of American moods, from Barber’s lyrical Summer Music for wind quintet to the minimalist and hypnotic Shaker Loops for string ensemble,, and Copland’s quintessentially optimistic Appalachian Spring itself quotes the Shaker hymn ‘Simple Gifts’. Korngold, an Austrian composer who was allowed to stay in America in the late 1930s because of the Nazi invasion of his homeland, was a highly talented pianist and composer of classical scores as well as film music. He composed the incidental music for ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ in 1918-19 and the suite, originally for chamber orchestra, was subsequently arranged by Korngold for violin and piano.
