Royal Northern Sinfonia
Sunday 19 January, 2025
3.00pm, St Mary’s Church, Wooler
The outstanding violinist Maria Włoszczowska, Artistic Partner of Royal Northern Sinfonia, directs the orchestra in an all-Schubert programme. His monumental Octet, large-scale chamber music that is almost orchestral in concept, was written in 1824 and is full of energy and Schubert’s inimitable lyricism. His Symphony No.5, an earlier work from 1816, shows the influence of Mozart in its lightness and youthful spirit, the two works together forming a lovely pairing for this afternoon concert.

Highlights Rural Touring Scheme works with grassroots volunteers from over 65 village halls and community venues across the North of England to bring vibrant, entertaining and thought-provoking performances and live events to the heart of rural communities.
Highlights promoter Tricia Meynall said after a performance in 2022:
“Maddie’s voice is extraordinary and matched with their beguiling guitar playing they can't possibly go wrong. For such a young performer their lyrics are wise beyond their years. Our small rural village hall audience was enraptured throughout the evening. I can't wait to hear them again”

ROYAL NORTHERN SINFONIA
- Wind and Brass Ensemble
- SATURDAY 19 OCTOBER 2024. 7.30PM
- ST MARY’S CHURCH, WOOLER
A programme of vigorous and colourful music that shows off the skills of RNS wind and brass players. The first half begins with vibrant brass music from Renaissance Venice by Gabrieli, and continues with Ligeti’s early, very witty and folk-inspired Bagatelles for wind quintet. These are followed by Stravinsky’s 1923 Octet that brings 18th century mannerisms, echoes of Stravinsky’s own ballets and 1920s jazz together in a delightful combination. In the second half of the concert, Mozart’s Serenade in C minor has all the grace, stamina and lyricism familiar from his mature works that prepare us nicely for Beethoven’s poised and energetic Octet.
